The NK-Salem Foundation has a remarkable track record of making a positive impact on the lives of the less-privileged since its inception during the challenging 2020 pandemic period. This year, they are taking their commitment to the next level by organizing the KSM Festival, a nationwide event that is sure to bring communities together in the spirit of unity and togetherness.

The festival will kick off with a health screening exercise after a health walk, emphasizing the importance of physical and mental well-being. The event will also include a community cleanup initiative to promote cleanliness and environmental awareness.

A highlight of the festival is an inter-community football gala, featuring eight teams from the Kisseman community, showcasing the local talent and fostering friendly competition. This promises to be a thrilling spectacle for football enthusiasts.

But it’s not all about sports. The KSM Festival will also celebrate the rich culture of Ghana, with displays of traditional music, dance, and art. Families are sure to find joy in the dedicated kids’ zone, and food lovers will be able to savor a variety of delectable local and international cuisines.

A representative of NK-Salem Foundation spoke passionately about the event, encouraged everyone in the community to take full advantage of the health screening and all the festival’s offerings. The foundation’s primary goal is to improve and change lives for the better, and they are dedicated to making a positive impact on the lives of the less fortunate.

NK-Salem Foundation’s commitment to making a difference was exemplified when they made headlines by distributing 1,000 envelopes containing GH¢50 notes to street hawkers on the streets of Accra on 3rd October 2023. This gesture demonstrated their unwavering dedication to improving the lives of those in need.

NK-Salem Medical Centre is located in Achimota Abofu on the GH Media Stretch, and they are inviting the entire community to join them at the KSM Festival 2023, promising an unforgettable day of unity, wellness, and community spirit. After 12 years of hosting the annual event at James Town in Accra, the organisers changed the venue for the 13th edition of the Arts Festival to the Black Star Square.

Over the weekend, the people of Ga Mashie took their turn in the Homowo festivities for this year.

The streets of Ga Mashie were filled with the beating of the Odadaoo drums by the Gbese Mantse, as the townsfolk and tourists alike trooped the principal streets with excitement.

The special traditional meal, ‘Kpokpoi’ and palm nut soup were cooked and sprinkled all across the municipality as custom demands.

Homowo is a festival celebrated by the Gas to recount the devastating famine faced by their ancestors and to commemorate the return of rain.

The word Homowo (Homo – hunger, wo – hoot) means “to hoot at hunger” in the Ga language. Homowo is one of the colourful festivals celebrated by the Ga traditional area.

The people of Nungua begin the celebration, followed by Lante Dzan We Clan, then Tema, Ga Mashie, La, Osu, Teshie, Kpone, Prampram and Ningo.

The festival begins with the planting of maize, which is used for the preparation of traditional food, “kpookoi” during the festival. It’s characterized by the sprinkling of “Kpokpoi” to the gods and ancestors for spiritual protection. A month before this celebration is done there is a ban on noise-making.

This year’s celebration had a sharp change due to the death of the Queen mother of the Ga State, Naa Dede Omaedru III. Usually, the chief and his kinsmen sprinkle kpookoi on the principal streets within Ga Mashie but this year it was done in houses.

The centuries-old Homowo festival has become a uniting force among the Ga people.

A three-storey building consisting of 16 bedrooms owned by Shengfa Company Ghana Limited has been completely destroyed by a fire outbreak.

The Chinese company near Obuasi in the Adansi North District has lost all their belongings to the incident which happened on Thursday, 17th February.

The Human Resource Manager of Shengfa Company, Isaac K. Normanyo, told Adom News how he received the message and immediately called the Obuasi Fire Service.

According to him, the fire service directed him to inform the Fomena Fire Service due to their faulty fire tender.

However, when Formena Fire Service, the AGA, and Bekwai fire tenders arrived at the scene, all the belongings of the Chinese nationals were completely burnt into ashes.

READ ALSO:

Mr Normayo noted that there was no casualty except two Chinese who were injured during the incident and have been sent to the hospital.

Reports from Obuasi District Police Commander, DSP Martin Asenso, revealed that the fire outbreak was caused by the meter in the building.

A new mum who peaked the scales at 21st lost seven stone after ditching her £800-a-month fast-food diet when doctors warned she might not live to see her daughter grow up.

Lillie Monro, 24, always struggled with her weight and would often have a takeaway burger for breakfast, as well as fast food for lunch and dinner.

Now, she’s swapped the burgers for salads, and as well as seeing her weight plummet, her finances also look healthier.

At her heaviest, her poor diet saw her reach 21st just before daughter Mila, two, was born, and a doctor warned the new mum she might not see her baby grow up.

Weighing 19st 1lb, and with her newborn baby in her arms, she pledged to change, and shrank 7st in a year, going from a size 22-24 to a 10-12.

She now weighs a healthy 12st.

Lillie Monro after her weight loss with her daughter Mila

The mum no longer spends £150-200 a week on fast food, meaning her food bills have halved, and she can climb the stairs without getting out of breath.

Lillie, an MOT, service and repairs adviser from Halstead, Essex said: “I literally lost a whole person worth of weight. My GP told me I wouldn’t see my daughter grow up so I knew I had to make rapid changes.

“I don’t think I’d have been able to do it if she hadn’t said that and I didn’t have Mila.

“I really enjoy just playing with her now: I wasn’t able to do that before.

“I didn’t do any exercise, just Slimming World. I actually really enjoyed it. I could still eat really big portions.

“I just changed the amounts of different foods so I was eating more of the right things and less of others, and cooked from scratch.

“At first I thought of it as a diet, but actually it’s a lifestyle change and that’s why it’s still working.”

As a 17st teen, Lillie said she didn’t like to go shopping with her friends, and first went to Slimming World aged 12 or 13.

She tried other diets too, but always found she put the weight back on afterwards, she said.

Lillie weighed 21st just before little Mila, now two, was born in February 2019, and 19st 1 shortly after.

The new mum was so uncomfortable about her weight she wouldn’t go out to the shops, or with her friends, and wouldn’t eat meals out, she said.

She went to her GP and was given medication for depression and anxiety, when Mila was three months old, in May 2019.

The female doctor told the mum her weight put her at risk of diabetes, heart failure, and other health risks, and she might not see her baby grow up, she said.

New-mum Lillie had feared losing little Mila when she was taken into neonatal intensive care with suspected sepsis just hours after being born, she said.

“You don’t expect your doctor to tell you you’re going to pop your clogs, but I’m so glad she did,” said Lillie.

“That was my wake-up call.https://get-latest.convrse.media/?

“When she said it, it reminded me of that fear of loss when Mila was in intensive care: it was so awful, really dreadful.

“I went home from the GP and cried my eyes out then decided to make changes.”

Thus, no parade, neither will the Independence Square march by schools and organisations hold.

Check out Mahama’s new title https://www.adomonline.com/check-out-mahamas-new-title/ Sun, 20 Sep 2020 10:30:28 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=1856670 Presidential candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, was on Friday installed as the Nkosouhene (Development Chief) of the Apesika Traditional area in the Kintampo South constituency of the Bono East region.

Under the stool name Nana Beyeman Kwame Ababio I, Mr Mahama was taken through the customary rites by the Chief of Jema and Kyidomhene of the Nkoranza Traditional Council, Nana Amponsah Gyan II.

Nana Gyan explained that the NDC presidential candidate deserves to be honoured as he undertook massive development projects in the area when he was the President of Ghana.

Speaking at a durbar held in honour of Mr Mahama, Nana Gyan acknowledged projects such as roads, water and schools as some of the legacy projects of the then government of President Mahama.

The chief was, however, unhappy that the projects started during the Mahama administration had been abandoned by the Akufo-Addo government.

Nana Gyan, therefore, urged his people to return the NDC to power by voting for Mr Mahama in the December 7 presidential election to enable him continue from where he left in 2016.

For his part, Mr Mahama expressed appreciation to the chiefs and people of Apesika for the honour bestowed on him.

He said if elected as president in the December 7 general election, the next NDC government will complete all the abandoned projects.

General I. K. Acheampong led a group of disgruntled army officers and usurped Prime Minister Dr Kofi Abrefa Busia’s government in 1972, and formed a government which they called The Supreme Military Council (SMC).

However, in 1978, General Acheampong was accused of economic mismanagement and forced to resign by a group of army officers led by General Akuffo.

On May 15, 1979, Flt. Lt Jerry John Rawlings was arrested and imprisoned after he led a group of junior Ghanaian army officers in an attempted coup d’état against the military government led by General Fred Akuffo.

The mutiny by the junior soldiers in Ghana Army was foiled by the Chief of Army Staff of the Supreme Military Council II (SMC II) Major- General Odartey-Wellington. He was a high-ranking member of the (SMC II).

On the night of June 3, 1979, a group of junior officers including Major Boakye Djan and enlisted personnel of the Fifth Battalion and the Reconnaissance Regiment in Burma Camp staged a bloody coup and freed Rawlings.

On June 4, 1979, Ghana was ushered into its morning life with an announcement on radio by Flight Lieutenant Rawlings of a change in government by the Armed Forces Revolutionary Council (AFRC).

He declared that he and some other ranks had taken over the government and asked officers and men to report to Nicholson Stadium inside Burma Camp where election of officers would take place.

He invited all officers who knew they had nothing to fear to attend the meeting.

Barely an hour and half later, Major- General Odartey-Wellington, Chief of Army Staff, announced on the air that an uprising which occurred in the early hours had been suppressed.

He, therefore, ordered officers and men of the (AFRC) to return to their respective units while steps were being taken to return the Armed Forces to normalcy.

He then invited Flight Lieutenant Rawlings and his supporters to meet him at the First Infantry Brigade headquarters at Kpeahie Ridge and promised there would be no arrests and victimisation.

The lull, which followed this announcement was, however, broken at 3.32 p.m. when a special Radio Ghana announcement said that Flight-Lieutenant Rawlings and his men had taken over control of the country.

Notable on the day was a display by Major- General Odartey-Wellington He entered an armoured car and single-handedly shot for three continuous hours. When he ran out of cartridges, he dashed to the Nima Police Station to surrender. That was the last time he breathed.

Unfortunately, he was killed on the spot by military officers immediately he came out of the armoured truck.

Major (Rtd) Ibrahim Rida described what happened: “They just opened fire. They just opened fire,” the bespectacled former soldier still appeared shaken by the 41-year-old story.

“He was hit….and as he was lying down dying, the normal way was [for him] to have been given medical aid immediately. Instead they opened fire on his body with a machine gun. They fired so much into his body that his flesh started shredding out. They literally shredded his body.”

Major General Odartey-Wellington attended Accra Academy in Ghana and various military training institutions including the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst (RMAS), and the United States Army Infantry School (Fort Benning, Georgia).

After being commissioned as an officer, he saw action in the Congo during the Congo Crisis, and also served in the Ghanaian UNIFIL contingent in the Middle East.

Under the National Redemption Council and Supreme Military Council I (SMC I) governments led by General I.K. Acheampong, Odartey-Wellington served in various military command and civil administrative positions. He was Chief Executive of the Ghana Timber Marketing Board, Commissioner (Minister) of Health and subsequently Commissioner of Agriculture tasked with implementing Acheampong’s nationalistic “Operation Feed Yourself” programme, before reverting to the position of Commander, No. 1 Infantry Brigade Group in 1977.

That incident marked the beginning of the uprising.

After the incident, all military installations were searched and senior military officers who were on the side of the Supreme Military Council (SMC II) were killed. It was on the same day that Col. The AFRC ruled from June 1979 to September 1979. Power was handed to Dr Hilla Limann in September 1979. But Rawlings again overthrew Limann on 31st December 1981.

Though June 4 or the June 4th Revolution, otherwise known as June 4th Uprising, became a noted date in Ghana’s history, it has been said to be a date that brings a lot of pain to people who either lost loved ones, lost businesses or had to flee the country for their dear lives.

Osu Castle, also known as Christiansborg Castle, is a castle located in Osu, Accra, Ghana.

Christiansborg Castle was built by Danish colonialists in 1659 on a land obtained from Paramount Chief Okaikoi of the Ga ethnic group.

Over the years, the fort was juggled between the Portuguese, Swedish and Danish. Sometimes it was taken over by force; other times it was bought.

Seizing the castle

In 1693, Asamani, an Akwamu Chief, planned to seize control of the castle by way of a cunning trick.

A successful trader and warrior, Asameni moved to Accra, became proficient in the Danish language and disguised himself as a cook and interpreter to secure work at the castle.

He studied the site, and its occupants and operations, including the ships’ arrivals and departures as well as those of traders, merchants and others who worked and visited the Christiansborg castle.

The Akwamu was a state set up by Akan people (in present-day Ghana) that flourished in the 17th and 18th centuries.

Asamani informed the Danes that he would escort a group of Akwamu traders to purchase ammunition.

Asamani Akwamu

In 1693, Asamani and 80 armed men impersonating traders entered the castle.

Since it was accepted practice to test merchandise prior to purchase, the men were given ammunition.

But they had also hidden ammunition, powder and shots under their clothes.

Once in the castle, the Akwamu attacked the unsuspecting Danes.

A fierce battle ensued. Severely wounded, Governor Janssen escaped to nearby Fort Crevecoeur.

Many Danish merchants and officials were injured, and some were taken to Akwamu as captives.

Asamani and his men captured the castle.

The Akwamu leader, Asameni occupied the Christiansborg castle for a year appointing himself “Governor” of Christiansborg Castle, trading with merchants from many nations.

He replaced the Danish with the Akwamu flag.

In 1694, Asamani sold the fort back to the Danes for 50 marks of gold (400 troy ounces, worth about $666,920.00 Today) but retained the keys.

How a powerful Ghanaian Chief, Asamani of Akwamu tricked the Danes and took over the Christiansborg Castle in 1693 and later sold it back to the Danes in 1694.

The AKwamu Legacy

The Keys are still in the ethnic group’s possession till this day and it had since been kept by the Akwamu as a trophy and a proud symbol of the resistance by the Akwamus from the Danes.

In 1957, when Ghana became independent, with Queen Elizabeth II as head of state, the fort became Government House, the residence of the Governor-General.

When Ghana became a republic in 1960, it became the residence of Ghana’s first president, Kwame Nkrumah.

On November 10, 1961, Queen Elizabeth II started her tour in Ghana, four years after the nation had gained independence from her country.

She was originally meant to visit in 1959 but had to cancel because she was pregnant. She spent 11 days touring the country.

But before she left the UK to start her tour which was to take place from November 9 to 20, British MPs and the public didn’t want her to go.

They were worried about rising tensions in a country where President Kwame Nkrumah was well on his way to becoming a ‘dictator’.

They were wary of the visit becoming unsafe for her as the head of the British crown.

To make matters worse at the time, five days before Queen Elizabeth’s trip was to begin, bombs went off in the capital city of Accra, hitting a statue of Nkrumah.

On the contrary, these events did not deter the Queen from her plan to visit the former colony.

When Elizabeth II finally arrived in Ghana, she witnessed parades and festivals in her honour with kings, queen-mothers, princes and a host of other nobles present to pay homage to her.

From the moment Elizabeth arrived in Ghana, along with Prince Philip, she was warmly greeted by crowds and excitement across the country.

Post-independence, the country had embarked on a program of “African socialism” in an attempt to strengthen its economy after years of colonialism.

A neo-Marxist Ghanaian paper found Queen Elizabeth to be “the world’s greatest Socialist Monarch in history.”

It was an unusual description for an enormously wealthy hereditary head of state but indicated how popular she was.

At a state dinner, Dr Nkrumah celebrated Queen Elizabeth saying, “The wind of change blowing through Africa has become a hurricane. Whatever else is blown into the limbo of history, the personal regard and affection which we have for Your Majesty will remain unaffected.”

In her reply, she said nations of the Commonwealth could disagree without members needing to leave.

Queen Elizabeth garnered massive media attention by dancing with Nkrumah at the dinner. Several foreigners were displeased because Nkrumah was African.

Queen Elizabeth II captured dancing with Nkrumah while her husband is dancing Nkrumah’s wife, Fathia Nkrumah

Having the Queen and a former colonial subject arm-in-arm on the dance floor was a way to demonstrate her acceptance of a new footing between their countries.

Queen Elizabeth’s journey helped Ghana get highly sought-after funding for the Volta Dam, a hydroelectric project that was a centrepiece of Dr Nkrumah’s economic plans.

Once she returned, the Prime Minister at the time, Macmillan contacted President John F. Kennedy to say, “I have risked my Queen. You must risk your money.”

Financial backing from the Americans for the project soon came through, which cut off a potential avenue of influence for the Soviets.

Member of Parliament (MP) for Assin Central, Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, has called for the detention of the former Second Deputy Governor of the Bank of Ghana (BoG) Dr Johnson Asiamah.

According to Mr Agyapong, he cannot fathom how Dr Asiamah could accumulate some huge amount of money to purchase a house worth about $1.5 million at Chains Homes in Airport Valley.

“Dr Asiamah has to be arrested. He is not a businessman like us, so how much is his salary to enable him to purchase a house that is estimated to be about 1.5 million dollars. They will come after them.

“It amazes me when I hear people like Asiamah tagging New Patriotic Party (NPP) as corrupt government, the kind of mess the National Democratic Congress created before leaving power is horrible, they don’t have the right to condemn the NPP’s good work,” Mr Agyapong said this on Net2 TV.

Mr Agyapong, a “faithful” member of the ruling NPP said if Dr Asiamah dares to critique the NPP or respond to the allegations leveled against him, more corrupt hidden information will be dropped about him.

Recently, the former-deputy Governor of BoG, Dr Asiamah heavily criticised the current leadership of the BoG for their modus operandi in the banking sector cleanup.

Dr Asiamah had alleged that under the erstwhile John Dramani Mahama administration, the BoG was to embark on a similar clean-up exercise which would have cost the country far less than the current exercise did.

But, the BoG rubbished the claims insisting there is no evidence or record to the effect that the Mahama-led administration intended embarking on a clean-up exercise of any sort.

In 2016, Dr Asiamah was appointed as the Second Deputy Governor at BoG by former President John Dramani Mahama.

From issues of financing to land litigation, purchasing a home can be a daunting task for a first timer.

But with the MultiTV-M&C Habitat Fair kicking off Friday, there are handy solutions available.

Executive Director of real estate company, Elegant Homes, Dorothy Quarshie, explains that talking to the right people can make the process less complicated.

“What we do is that we take you round, we ask you your budget, we want to know what you want and in most cases, we take them to look view our East Legon properties. That is the first step,” she told Joy News’ Jennifer Akuamoah.

“The second step is to take you the Elegant Courts at Katamanso, so after viewing the client then decides what he or she wants. What we do is that we allow you to choose from our designs and have it modified for you – that is if you want us to build from scratch,” she adds.

Speaking on PM Express on the Joy News channel Thursday, Dorothy Quarshie said there was a 10% discount on deals as part of the ongoing fair.

The 2017 MultiTV-M&C Habitat Fair, just the previous years’, is aimed at bringing together technocrats in the housing sector to help solve the housing needs of Ghanaians.

The event was preceded by three mini fairs at the Achimota Retail Centre, West Hills Mall in June and July in Accra.

The fair comes off today on August 11th and ends on Sunday, August 13th at Accra International Conference Centre.

In Kumasi, the fair will be held on October 27 and 29.

A 24-year old girl in Abuakwa Abaase in the Nwabiagya South District of the Ashanti Region, Sarah Hammond, has gone blind for the past 10 days after being sprayed with a substance suspected to be pepper into her eyes.

The dastardly, act which happened on Wednesday, September 28, 2016 was alleged to have been carried out by some police officers from the Abuakwa Police station.

According to sources, the police officers did not only spray pepper into her eyes, but also stripped her naked in public and beat her mercilessly for several minutes until she nearly passed out.

According to the sources, the crime of the young girl was that she has harbored a pastor friend who was suspected to be involved in land litigation.

Her refusal to release him to the police officers who were not in uniform, the sources disclosed, led to her assault, because “the policemen took her an accomplice.”

One of the police officers, who led the assault, was later identified as an officer from the Community Protection Unit, popularly known as Community Police.

The victim is currently receiving treatment from the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) in Kumasi in the Ashanti Region.

Meanwhile, attempts by Today to get the Abuakwa District Police Commander to either confirm or deny the story proved futile as nobody was willing to talk.

A man who ‘died’ after downing shots of vodka with friends was taken to the morgue before waking up in a freezer, reports claim.

He had his “miraculous awakening” after partying too hard with pals, who then called an ambulance to the property in Khasanky, in Russia’s far east.

When medics arrived, they declared the man dead and took him to the morgue.

Speaking to the local newspaper Khasanskiye Vesti, police spokesman Aleksey Stoyev said: “That night the local morgue was filled to its capacity, the bodies were not only on the shelves, but also on the floor of the freezer room, where our ‘dead’ hero was allocated.”

He woke up in the freezer, before stumbling his way out of it towards shocked staff.

He added: “At some point, the man woke up, failing to understand where he was.

“It was very dark and cold.

“In addition his brain was foggy due to the influence of alcohol.

“In the darkness, he felt someone’s completely cold limbs and in fear rushed to the door.”

Police in the remote area, which is populated by 35,000 over 4,100 square kilometers, questioned the man before letting him go.

He then returned to the party, seeing his pals were still drinking – but this time in his memory,

However, after letting the shocked friends know what happened, their commemoration drinks were transformed into a “re-birthday party.”

This year’s edition of Luv Fm’s Skuulz Reunion in Kumasi promises to attract, perhaps, the biggest crowd ever for a single event in the Garden City.

Participating old school mates, companies and other associates look forward to an unforgettable experience.

Ahead of the D-Day, discussions have largely centred on funny happenings in school such as how relationships were cultivated and nurtured.

Several old mates recounted to Luv News how their alma maters have shaped their love lives.

“During my time at Prempeh College in the early 90’s, we were even groomed on how to approach ladies from other schools and that boosted our confidence in wooing ladies. It’s no surprise the Yaa Asantewaa and St. Louis Girls still can’t have enough of us,” recounted an Amanfoo.

But whether or not such relationships blossomed into permanent partnership or fizzled into nothingness is a subject on its own.

Over fifty school associations have registered for the annual fun-filled event   slated for Saturday at the Baba Sports Stadium.

Rousing in-studio performances have already set the tone for Saturday.

For over a decade, the Skuulz Reunion has lived up to its billing as the single biggest outdoor event in Kumasi.

This 2015 edition has seen more school associations from outside the Ashanti Region coming on board.

It has also seen a high turnout of oldies joining the youngsters and girls to do the school days stuff on air.

The Skullz Reunion creates an avenue for participants to re-establish contact with their old friends while exploring social and business opportunities.

Nostalgic feeling already hits fever pitch as school association representatives showcase what sets their alma mater apart from others.

It’s always interesting to hear the frolics of the old folks as they dish out exhilarating cheer songs, popularly known as “Gyama”.

The zeal of schools to outdo each other adds more fun to the in-studio sessions as healthy rivalry is shown in diverse ways.

In the midst of the bragging, old skull folks display intellectual skill in the sharp brain contest.

This edition of the skuulz reunion will also see the second coming of hip life artiste, Kwaw Kese, who had an encounter with the law for smoking “wee” just after performing at the reunion last year.

Now a freeman, “Abodam” jokingly tells the regional police commander, DCOP Kofi Boakye to expect to see him (Abodam) in the Garden City.

“Somebody should tell Kofi Boakye that I will be in town on Saturday so he should expect to see me,” he said in a promo to hype his coming.

Self-styled Dancehall King, Shatta Wale, is also billed to thrill participants at the event grounds.

Event Coordinator, Louis Lamis, says all is set for Saturday and promises an unforgettable experience in this edition.

“The venue is ever ready to hold the event; we have set-up the dais already. We have some new additions to the Skuulz Reunion. We’ve introduced the Seniors Corner where the oldies can do their own thing. There is also a Basketball Competition, table tennis and snooker contest among other exciting activities,” he said.

Now, do you have any reason to miss out on the Skullz Reunion?

Make no mistake!!
